9 Reasons Why Beach Sessions Are Awesome!

Okay, I’m just going to say it – I don’t think I could live anywhere that’s completely landlocked. I can’t imagine not having the ocean nearby!
Some of my best memories revolve around the beach. Collecting shells … splashing in the water … shallow pools of water to explore. Even making sandcastles you know are only temporary evokes a certain whimsical fatalism, doesn’t it? You know the sandcastle will soon be washed away, but, hearing the sea birds, listening to the grasses rustling in the breeze, feeling the sand underneath you – it all makes it okay. Even today, it’s hard to beat the feeling I get sitting along the water.
If you’re sitting, nodding your head, then I think it’s time for us to get together for a beach session. It just might be the best decision you make in 2022!
Read through my list of reasons why you should schedule your next session at the beach!

Beat the fall rush. We can certainly still photograph your session in the autumn, but by scheduling now, you’ll have the advantage of booking before my calendar starts to rapidly fill. Holiday cards designed and ready to go by October? Oh yeah!

Make a family day out of it. While we’ll certainly make memories during our time together, once our session concludes, why not continue to play in the water? Search for shells. Bring a blanket along and have a brunch or dinner picnic on the beach. Go fishing. Most of all, soak in this time with your loved ones.

The beach makes for a perfect playground. Who doesn’t love sand, sun, water and waves? No matter how old you are, the beach is the most superb place to play.

Golden Hour. You might have heard that photographers love scheduling sessions right around sunset. The light is terrific. Colors are vibrant. And the photos we’ll create together will be totally Instagram-worthy.

Wear what you want to wear. White tees and blue jeans be gone! (Or, wait, now that 90s are back, will we see the return of this trend, too? Hmmmmmm.) Dress up or down. Wear a fun floral print or an ethereal, flowy dress. I’m also always available to you to chat about wardrobe options for your session day, as well!

Beach sessions are breathtakingly scenic. And the images we create together will be priceless!

Looking Up Photography IMG_0577 web0368 Looking Up Photography

Sun or no sun, beach photos are exquisite. In fact, some of my favorite beach sessions have been photographed on cool, cloudy days. With the beach as our background, the photos will look wonderful in almost any weather.

You have that summer glow. If you schedule your session in the summer months, through about September, that sun-kissed summer skin really gives your images a little something extra.

It seems like baby showers, backyard parties, and extra special get togethers are even more meaningful this year! Well, add another celebration to the list because that’s how I roll. I was recently lucky enough to photograph the ultimate, feminine studio newborn session. I was also able to include this family’s fur baby by including it in this amazing family newborn session. Nothing says girly like pink! I pulled out the softest, peachy hue in my collection for this session. My adorable little client was made even more darling with these accessories. And I’ve noticed myself pulling out similar colors a lot this summer, for my clients. Adding in a rosebud headband, a few textured blankets, and a gorgeous basket, is always a good idea, too!

Newborn Baby Emelia – A Classic Studio Session with the Family Dog!

I have been so excited at the thought of sharing this classic yet fun family studio newborn session! This session is proof that inspiration can come from anywhere (even the family dog). I loved this amazing family and the fact that mom Jackie wanted to include their small dog in the shoot. I always want to celebrate how special my client families are – and that includes fur babies! This shoot showcases whites and neutrals mixed with subtle textures. It’s one of my favorites from this spring! Check out the stunning photos and see how gorgeous newborn sweetheart Emelia is …

Check out this classic setup! I’m happy to say I believe I nailed Jackie’s vision here, with the different white textures. Although I’m always happy to incorporate more props and details, I also love keeping things simple. With all the attention on Emelia, you just know how special she is going to be! I’m also excited to see how Jackie and Christian decide to display these images in their hallways and master bedroom.

On to another beautiful setup! Can you tell I’m happy to oblige a request for textured neutrals in the studio?! This amazing blanket – I’m just obsessed with the subtle patterns it creates and the touch of warmth it gives Emelia’s photos.

How fabulous is this setup? I really love all of the textures, and subtle use of color. And don’t get me started on exquisite Emelia’s pouty little mouth! She is such a terrific subject, which of course helped the pictures from this session turn out especially amazing!

The Sweetest Studio Newborn Session for Baby Ezra and His Parents

Baby season is a thing, and it’s upon us, friends! I have photographed so many newborns in the past few months! And let’s be honest – there isn’t anything that brings people together quite like an adorable new babe. I’m sharing a recent, spring studio newborn session to show you just some of the amazing memories a studio newborn session at Looking Up Photography can offer you. I have everything from the big, showstopping props, to the sweet and minimal pieces featured in this newborn session. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at all this cuteness!

1120 Looking Up Photography

I love the colors mom Sarah chose for a neutral newborn session. Touches of gray, and shades of blue made for the perfect color scheme. Of course, my natural studio lighting helped me achieve all this gorgeousness. At Sarah’s request, I kept everything very simple, with neutral tones. However, if you do want to do a little more or include a fun theme for your studio newborn session, I love using fun props as well!

My extensive collection of backgrounds, baskets, bowls, crates, blankets, swaddles and wraps provides my photography clients with so many amazing options for their sessions! And if these photos aren’t enough to give you baby fever, I don’t know what is. But seriously, there are so many great pieces in my studio collection that it was hard to choose which ones to use! Let’s take a look …

1116 Looking Up Photography1115 Looking Up Photography

I put together a few little basin and basket scenes with different accessories. This gray setup was perfectly cozy, using a more open knit, super soft baby blanket in a soft gray with a subtle pattern, and the cutest sleepy subject. I put a thick, chunky, woven blanket into a farmhouse style basin and added a softly textured white backdrop. These images will be a perfect fit for almost anywhere in the family’s home!

1112 Looking Up Photography

Driftwood is always a good idea! I love the modern aspect this basket brings to a session – it gives such a fun shape to photos! These layered baby blue blankets are great in it also. As a newborn photographer, you can’t ever have enough baby blankets.

1059 Looking Up Photography

These large knit blankets are soooo soft and soooo cuddly! They are a newborn session must.

1080 Looking Up Photography

Another set of amazing portraits! I fell in love with this baby blue collection the minute I saw it from the back of my camera – beautiful for a boy or girl saying, “I’m new here”. How adorable are these images? I added several layers to complete the look. Such great photos of new baby Ezra I know mom and dad will treasure!

1092 Looking Up Photography

The photo of Ezra’s feet was requested specifically by Sarah and it really did make the most adorable picture.

0995 Looking Up Photography

If you’re up for photos with baby, I can tell you that moms almost always love how the images of them with their new bundles of joy turn out! Of course, this mama is particularly gorgeous. Would you believe she doesn’t think she’s photogenic? Crazy, I say. Of course, having a professional photographer photograph you is always a great investment.

I can’t think of anything that will put a bigger smile on the faces of grandparents! So stinking cute. And in the future, baby Ezra will be able to look back on these pictures of him with his mom!

1012 Looking Up Photography

More great images are these with dad. Trust me, you’ll want these in the future! From the baby stage to toddlerhood and beyond, children love to look at photos of themselves with their parents. For growing families, pictures are something you can’t ever have enough of!

1026 Looking Up Photography1033 Looking Up Photography

Now, if you REALLY want to win a “Best Gift” award from a set of new parents, a studio newborn session will do the trick. I mean, isn’t this everything you could want? It’s a beautiful time for any couple.

So many amazing images from this session!

Sweet Baby Milestone + Family Studio Session for Baby Tomas

It’s been a minute since I got to work with a mama who wanted to style a session that included outfit changes. Luckily, I was able to accommodate Gabriela’s request, get her cute family in front of the camera, and I’m SO happy with how it turned out! I’m also thrilled that, after her internet research and website portfolio reviews, Gabriela asked me to make this pretty come to life. Just wait until you see how Gabriela and Dino’s little sweethearts hammed it up in the studio!

Because Tomas has a possible egg allergy, Gabriela and I worked together to come up with an alternative setting for his first birthday portraits. These beautifully styled, oversized typeface letters, and some very minimal white and clear balloons, did the trick perfectly! I’d love to see more of my families go this route for birthdays.

0431 Looking Up Photography0744 Looking Up Photography0684 Looking Up Photography

These father-son and mother-son portraits have to be some of my recent favorites! What an amazing series this would be to display on a wall in the family home. Gabriela told me she intends to display these photos in many places in their home, including the master bedroom, living room, and in the kids’ bedrooms! It’s still such an awesome feeling, knowing how many families have my work adorning their walls, memories made and treasured.

While I adore photographing at beautiful outdoor locations in Connecticut, I love when families schedule portrait sessions inside the studio. When I look back through albums, I’m always struck by how classic images taken in the studio are. There aren’t usually many of these photos, which makes them all the more special!

You see … those visits to parks and the beach, etc. – they’re all great. But playing as a family – these are the moments that remind us where the heart is. I love when I can photography my clients in the studio. With that in mind, consider moving your family milestone session into the studio!

An Amazing and Coastal Cool Family Newborn Session at the Studio for Baby Teddy

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of planning and capturing this stupendous family newborn session for a family celebrating the birth of their newest family member, Teddy! We had so much fun celebrating this cutie and the rest of the family as well! Teddy’s mom Lori had a beautiful, coastal inspired vision that we brought to life with understated colors and textures. A Beautiful Session at Tod’s Point with Fall Foliage Flair!

Last fall I had the chance to photograph the prettiest family. Katie and Alex’s family reminds me of the joy of having little ones on the move, and how fortunate we are to have such a beautiful ‘backyard’ to play in, here in Greenwich, Connecticut. While I was editing this session, I played some of my favorite autumn-inspired music and it was heavenly! Today I’m sharing a little bit of this perfect fall family session, with a little fall foliage flair. Scroll down to see all the sweet details, including a local Greenwich magazine feature!

Well, I’d love to begin by sharing this delightful magazine cover of Greenwich Neighbors magazine, published this month by Best Version Media. Katie used my photos for their feature and it turned out so gorgeous. You can also visit Katie’s blog, Witten Kitchen, here. It’s the little things, for me.

When I first saw this image of father and son from the back of my camera, I loved the expressions it held. It has just enough softness and movement in it with that amazing natural backdrop, and baby Rory’s extended hand. This session was inspired by family, the season, and the natural beauty of the place we call home. Allowing children to be children is a key element of any outdoor family session (or any session, for that matter). Kids add so much life and emotional color to an image, often bringing out the very best and most organic expressions in their parents as well. I love how Alex, Rory, and I capitalized on that, here, allowing Katie’s vision for her family photos to be brought to life almost effortlessly.

1300 Looking Up Photography1448 Looking Up Photography

For the final photo, I always like to get a snapshot of parents without their fabulous children. It can be easy to forget that kids exist because of parents – and not the other way around – and it’s good for both adults and children to see their love for each other shine on its own!

A Traditional First Birthday Milestone Session for Baby Luca

This sweet milestone session might just be one of my favorites I’ve shared so far in 2022! I fell in love with the ocean-inspired color scheme right away. I’ve been dying to share this one and I’m so excited to finally do so. Starting with that, and Luca the superstar, it didn’t take much to make this cuteness come to life.

A Gorgeous, Pastel Cake Smash Session at the Looking Up Photography Studio

We are looking forward to spring, and what better way to do that than with a gorgeous studio cake smash session! Before COVID, I had the pleasure of doing many beautiful cake smash sessions, so I was excited to photograph this fun shoot with baby Reagan. All the balloons, and Reagan’s sweet smiles, gave me such a sense of normalcy as I photographed this session. One of my favorite vendors provided the cake, and you can find her information linked below. I couldn’t have been more honored that Kristen chose me to capture this milestone!

Let’s start off with a gorgeous frock – always a good place to start if you ask me! Kristen is responsible for picking out this beauty. I love both the classic design and the modern and punchy watercolors. We also got Reagan in a crisp white headband, which perfectly accented her cute little features!

Take a closer look at how expressive she is.

We captured so many beautiful photos – it was heaven! The light in my studio never disappoints and helps me bring the pretty. The two different outfits for Reagan were the sweetest ensembles that any baby girl would look incredible in. The balloon color combinations were fun and unique, especially when paired with gold accents. I’m always excited when I get to deck out the studio in such springy colors. I love it all! Such a lovely way to spend a day in the studio. What a dream!

A Magical Beach Session for the Sweetest 2 Year Olds

I’m in love with the beach. If you’re a beach family, there is no better location for your family portraits than Greenwich Beach! And what’s better than getting together with one of your favorite client families for a birthday celebration on the beach (times two)?! The twins turned two, and mom wanted a family beach session with her special people, complete with sandy toes and plenty of splashing! I had the best time putting together this gallery, and it sure looks like they enjoyed themselves, too. The beach brings out the best in little kids, and this family knows how to have fun! Of course, the beach also provides a stunning backdrop for your family pictures.
As usual, I have plenty of photos for you to see!

Some things never change, and two year-olds splashing in the water are as cute as ever! Of course I encouraged them to splash as much and as big as they wanted to! Then dad came in with that calming dad presence and I was able to capture some beautiful, poignant photographs to round out the gallery. Pure love!

A Cozy and Enchanting Studio Family Newborn Session for Max

Believe it or not, I have yet another session from 2021 – with one of my favorite families – that I need to share! Another magical session that has been tucked away in my vault of sessions itching to be shared! I got to spend time with mom Hien, dad Seth, and sweet Kaia once again, this time with baby boy Max in tow! The studio provided a gorgeous setting, and we added some whimsical touches, pops of color, and cute details. It was a beautiful day for beautiful people, and I feel fortunate that Hien again asked me to capture their family!

Gorgeous textures in cream and ivory had to make their way into this session, of course!

Have you ever seen such marvelous little cheeks? And Max was absolutely perfect, allowing me to create these stunning images with ease. I had so much fun creating imagery for his family to add to their walls and share with family.

These new gray newborn accessories! I can’t get enough of them, and they seem to really suit nearly every newborn session! I loved using some rustic wood accents to complement the lush softness of the gray accessories. And of course, I had to use my favorite cream colored flokati, which complements everything perfectly.

Kaia was so sweet with her new little brother, and she also was styled in the prettiest outfit. I love the delicacy of her ensemble!

Let’s Go to the Beach! It’s a Maternity + Family Beach Session

It’s a new year and I still have plenty to share from 2021! Let’s take a look at this adorable session! I had the pleasure of photographing Hien, Seth, and Kaia again. Kaia’s newborn session is a favorite of mine. You can take a look at it here! Hien contacted me to photograph their family again – not only because it was Kaia’s first birthday – but because the family is growing once more. She wanted to document both milestones and also include grandparents and other extended family. I happened to know just the place to capture this session, at the cutest little swath of beach right here in Connecticut. Not only is the location so pretty, but it’s an amazing spot for kids!

Wait ’til you see how we worked together to capture awesome memories for this beautiful family!

Karen-2

Hien chose the prettiest lavender gown for this maternity and extended family beach session. The family wore neutrals and pastels for their photographs, and I loved the color scheme!

Karen-4Karen-11

I loved the blend of blushes, blues, and whites, and how could those darling children not make you smile? Isn’t this location the dreamiest?

Karen-61Karen-18Karen-56

These two cousin cuties. I love how serious their expressions are! And those outfits were just perfection.

Karen-72Karen-26

These beach maternity images were some of my favorites! The pairing of pastels against the moody water and sky will always have a place in my heart. Those adorable laughs between Hien and Kaia won’t soon be forgotten. I can just see those pictures paired with some photos from Kaia’s newborn session. And of course, Hien can complete the look with a sweet image of Kaia with her grandparents.

Karen-29Karen-41Karen-48

We all had a lovely little time together. It’s the sweet relationships between family members that I always love, that really complete the session! Plus, who doesn’t love the beach?! So much fun!

The Sweetest and Prettiest Family Newborn Session for Lucie

Today, it’s a newborn celebration! Baby Lucie was born and I helped her family celebrate with a studio family newborn session, gorgeous greens, fabulous florals, and lots of cuteness! This family was a repeat client (I previously photographed big brother Arlo). The Looking Up Photography studio was the perfect place to have the family gather and celebrate the newborn birthday girl. I had the best time and I was so lucky to have an angel baby to help me bring this session to life. This session will be hard to top in 2022 but I think I can do it!

This family is full of natural beauty, and they made photographing this session such an easy job for me. My photography studio also truly helps me make magic and provides the most amazing light for my clients. Of course, some family portraits were the perfect finishing touch!

Newborn Photography Greenwich – Baby Girl Josephine

Josephine was joined by her mother Kellie, father Kenny, and big brother Bennett for her newborn session. This family newborn session was one to remember. I had previously photographed big brother Bennett when he joined the world. Despite the challenges of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, Kellie valiantly displayed her deep gratitude for the gift of a daughter, Josephine. In other words, a newborn right now? Totally worth it.

I’m happy to have captured this family’s blessing, Josephine, in a way that I hope they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

“May you always know, little one, that you were wished for, longed for, prayed for, and will be forever loved.”

1031 Looking Up Photography

The love parents have for their children is otherworldly. Miraculously, for many of us, that love begins when we first see an ultrasound or hear a heartbeat for the first time. When they’re finally in our arms, our lives are forever changed. Our priorities change to focus on our children and ensuring we provide the best life for them.

1040 Looking Up Photography1050 Looking Up Photography

When we give our first child a sibling, words can’t express how it feels seeing them together. Our love for both of our children instantly grows deeper and stronger. Maybe we learn a few new ways to practice patience, too! If we’re dedicated to doing what’s best for our family, as Kellie and Kenny are, a growing family can strengthen the bond between partners.

1079 Looking Up Photography1095 Looking Up Photography

This sweet face and these delicate hands? Worth the challenges of pregnancy. Motherhood fulfilled, once again.

Parenthood is a gift, and I hope Kellie and Kenny are continuing to enjoy almost every moment of it.

Creating memories for my clients is so important to me. This family portrait session is a celebration of the joy that has been bestowed on them. New life! I hope Josephine will enjoy these photos as she gets older, too.

Newborn Photography Greenwich – Baby Logan

Sandra, Logan’s mom, wanted to have a family newborn photography session so that she could look back on these images and cherish this special time forever. In her client survey, she shared with me how she wanted poses similar to and would complement the maternity and newborn imagery from big sister Taylor’s sessions.

As soon as baby Logan entered my studio, I fell completely in love with my business all over again.

0660 Looking Up Photography0690 Looking Up Photography

When I first learned that Sandra and her husband Andrew selected me to photograph the newest addition to their family once again, I was totally thrilled. After the challenges I faced as a photographer due to COVID, it was a welcome relief to see a ‘repeat’ family. Sandra made some photo orientation suggestions so that the photographs from this session could complement a family portrait and solo newborn portrait of Taylor already on display on a gallery wall in their home.

0693 Looking Up Photography

Even with the bulk of the coronavirus pandemic hopefully behind us, there’s always an element of nerves when it comes to scheduling sessions these days. But as a professional photographer, it’s so important not to worry and to know that what will be will be. There is always hope in the world and we have to trust in the universe’s timing – not ours. My smallest clients are the most amazing proof of this.

0698 Looking Up Photography0585 Looking Up Photography

Sure enough, this family newborn photography session went off without a hitch. These days, I almost cry with joy every time I have the honor of culling and editing another session. I have also had the best time adding to my newborn photography accessories collection. After all, who doesn’t love seeing a newborn baby in a basket (or a basin, in this case)?! It’s just so much fun.

0615 Looking Up Photography

The moment we placed big sister Taylor and baby brother Logan together, I could feel the rush of love Sandra and Andrew have for their little ones. Having children can be like falling in love all over again as parents’ hearts sync with their new baby. Looking forward, I hope to see this beautiful and healthy family again for some family portraits. Seeing my tiny clients grow up is a dream come true.

Newborn Photography Connecticut – Baby Navy

Navy’s mother, Samantha, shared that it was her previous experience with Looking Up Photography that brought her and her growing family back into the studio for a second family newborn session. Their family values “someone who takes great photos and makes you feel at ease”, which is such a compliment to me. Samantha told me that she enjoyed everything about our last session together, and that the photos she has from big sister Noa’s newborn session are some of her favorite photos of their family. Even in the studio, I could see baby Navy living up to the strength of his powerful name. Samantha wanted the same bonding experience she had during Noa’s newborn photo session and I was thrilled to deliver that for her. Now the family can look back at both sets of photos and admire their family’s fortitude and resilience.

If you’re a parent yourself, you know that adding another child to the family will forever change it. Parenthood may be more of a guessing game than we would all care to admit, but something we never have to guess about is how our hearts are always capable of giving out more love. New parenthood is physically and emotionally exhausting, and that experience is only intensified by COVID.

0299 Looking Up Photography0308 Looking Up Photography

It is my hope that this time together as a family, in my studio, made this family’s love for Navy and each other stronger. It was a celebration, after all!

0148 Looking Up Photography

With the family photos, I tried to capture this family’s sweet dispositions and easygoing natures. Family is a treasure and it is so important for everyone to have photos to show just how special their family is.

Merritt – A Studio Session at Three Weeks

I was so excited to shoot this last-minute newborn session in Greenwich, Connecticut at the Looking Up Photography studio. This family contacted me a couple of weeks after baby was born. They came to me because Merritt is their third child and they realized that they hadn’t commissioned newborn portraits for their other two children. They wanted to be sure Merritt had imagery to celebrate his birth, his natural sweetness as a newborn, and also his unique appearance. They contacted me and we captured Merritt’s newborn imagery all over the course of a week. Although I always recommend reaching out to me as soon as possible, when you’re expecting to welcome a new baby into your home, I love accommodating these sessions when I am able to. With any luck, we get perfect, sleepy poses with access to all of my props, swaddles, newborn outfits, and accessories … and … we can usually capture baby when they’re a little more alert. Eyes-open shots sometimes become some of my favorites, and they’re always beautiful!

0005 Looking Up Photography0017 Looking Up Photography0011 Looking Up Photography

Perfect Merritt. Alert and so very interested in what’s happening around him.

0034 Looking Up Photography

We got to capture a variety of setups. Here is sweet Merritt modeling one of my favorite caps. Just look at those tiny details. I also love how it contrasts with the chunky knit of the blanket he’s snoozing on.

0064 Looking Up Photography0076 Looking Up Photography0091 Looking Up Photography0095 Looking Up Photography

I love it when I’m able to get so much variety out of my setups. Many times, I focus on 2-3 prop displays and am able to produce a full and diverse gallery from those looks. I have been known to photograph from dozens of angles simply because I am especially inspired by the props or because my little subjects are so captivating.

Thank you, baby Merritt, for a fabulous session. You were a dream!

Greenwich Newborn Photographer – Baby Zara

Welcome to the world, baby Zara! Such an adorable bundle of joy and so loved by her family. Mom booked me for a newborn session as I had already photographed big sister Quinn last year. In planning for these photos, Nicole shared with me that she especially wanted some photographs in cream, mauve, and pink hues. I was so happy to see some lovely compliments from Nicole about Quinn’s session. Baby Zara and family came to the Looking Up Photography studio in Greenwich, for her newborn session. I could tell right away that Zara was going to be the perfect model, and indeed she was!

We got a lovely selection of photos in the lace onesie Nicole purchased especially for this session. Zara’s nursery is decorated in cream and olive colors, and I can just imagine how beautiful these images will look adorning her nursery walls. This makes my heart so happy!

Ever | Newborn and Two Month Studio Newborn Sessions

The beautiful thing about studio newborn photography is that family’s session is unique. There’s no “one size fits all” session for my clients. That’s why I love thinking creatively about my studio newborn sessions. A studio newborn session with Looking Up Photography is built to encourage family bonding and even imagination. From crowns for a prince to literal feather beds, my goal is to create a dream world, and to capture those memories to be enjoyed for years to come. That’s what I did with the “B” family. I had such a blast photographing them.

Adventures in Family Newborn Photography

This family newborn session took place at my studio in Greenwich, Connecticut, the Looking Up Photography studio. Because each member of the B family has such unique personalities, I wanted to make sure that their images were as unique as they are!

I pulled together two very special shoots for this family – one for newborn images, and one at Ever’s two-month mark. The resulting photos were stunning and really capture their love for each other!

Making Photo Memories

Both sessions were full of family moments of jokes, singing, wrestling, laughs, and more. But what’s more important is that we made memories during these studio sessions. It was a beautiful experience for all of us. And, best of all, it’s captured in beautiful photographs to be enjoyed for years to come.

Judah’s Studio Newborn Session

If you’re expecting a baby, or already a parent and looking for a newborn, maternity, or family photographer, I would love to work with you to create images you’ll love for a lifetime. You can also give sessions with me as a gift, which is exactly what my friend Susan Isaak did. Susan is a real estate salesperson in town, and she purchased a newborn session as a gift for her clients. What a gift!

As a professional newborn photographer, my goal is, of course, to have a baby who sleeps through the duration of the session! I prep my clients in detail before their session. Partners can switch off this ‘duty’ while the other gets ready for the session. Parents can also try to feed the baby 30-45 minutes before their session time, so we’re almost guaranteed that there will be a good diaper change before the session! If mom is breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid drinks and food that can give baby gas before session time.

Even if parents follow this advice perfectly, every now and then I’ll have a baby who has a harder time getting settled. As a professional newborn photographer, you know I have a few tools and tricks I use to help settle baby. Still, there’s always a chance that the baby just doesn’t want to sleep. In those cases my job is to put parents at ease so that we can all roll with the punches and I can deliver an absolutely beautiful final gallery. Whether baby is asleep or awake, my goal is always to keep everyone happy.

An awake newborn was not my experience with Judah, who was just the most perfect little subject. I’m pretty sure he was asleep the whole time!

Judah loved to stretch, and wiggle his arms and toes out of the swaddles, which made for some absolutely adorable images. It also made my job of snapping photos of his little toes that much easier!

Danielle and Carl were incredibly calm and had a go-with-the-flow attitude. I loved working with this precious family!

Cayden – Belly to Baby Session in Greenwich, Connecticut

All roads to pregnancy are different. Some are clearly planned, with few bumps … they include detailed road maps. Some “roads” are more like roller coasters, with surprises around each turn, ups and downs. And some are like that road trip your parents forced you to take when you were a teenager. Forced smiles, frustrations, and counting down to that destination. However easy or complicated the journey, once pregnancy passes a certain stage, at least one new life has been created and the lives of everyone involved are forever changed. This lovely couple’s journey was a bit like that road trip with the parents, but it’s clear that the end result is sheer joy. They have a healthy and beautiful little boy and are so at ease as new parents, it’s like they’ve been parenting for years.

Cayden was such a trooper for his session! He slept amazingly.

For Cayden’s session, mom wanted a “cabin-in-the-woods” type feel. I was more than happy to oblige mom’s wishes. My heart almost stopped when I looked at some of these images at the back of the camera, as I knew they’d be absolutely perfect!

I also incorporated some wood elements into the newborn gallery as I felt it would be a great complement! When I brought the imagery into my computer for editing, I wasn’t disappointed at all.

In keeping with mom’s request, I used some gorgeous blues for some of Cayden’s posed imagery. I also loved the shades of green Courtney incorporated into the maternity session. I absolutely love this color of green!

These sessions were such an honor to photograph. Enjoy this small peek into their journey from belly to baby!

Looking Up Photography – Family Master Photographer Certification

Fellow professional photographers and clients alike have asked me about this, so I wanted to share a short blog post about this recent recognition. I also wanted to inform you about what makes up the application process!

First, you may remember that I am in possession of another of the National Association for Professional Child Photographers‘ (NAPCP) Master Photographer Certifications. After receiving my Newborn Master Certification, I knew certification in the Family category would be a goal I hoped to meet in 2021. For those who may be unfamiliar with the group, NAPCP is an association of professional photographers who are recognized in the child and family photography industry. The association’s members include some of the best across the more specialized categories within child and family photography.

According to NAPCP, “The NAPCP Master Photographer Certification Program rewards NAPCP members by acknowledging their excellence in the craft of professional photography. The NAPCP evaluation panel is constantly reviewing hundreds of images submitted in portfolios before awarding Mastery certificates in each category.”

Similarly to when I applied for Newborn Master Certification, I first carefully assembled a portfolio of Family Photography imagery. I included some of my favorite photographs in the portfolio, in addition to the best technically proficient images that were so important for scoring purposes. Once again I asked questions. I asked the opinions of my professional photographer peers, in addition to friends and loved ones. I reviewed my portfolio and reviewed it again to ensure it met the extremely specific requirements. There isn’t anything quite so nerve wrecking as pressing the button to “Submit”! I was on pins and needles, anxiously awaiting my results. It can be so difficult to wait sometimes (even with that old adage about “good things” in mind …)!

The feedback from the judges was “Wonderful portfolio. Love the range and variety you showcased here, capturing authentic expressions in each. Great job.”

I am so proud to have my name among the other Master Photographers in the Family category.

Master Photographer Certification in the Family category is an amazing opportunity and accomplishment for me. It is incredibly validating to know that your livelihood isn’t just ‘work’, but also that it is appreciated by your peers, and brings joy to others!

Many thanks, NAPCP!

Austin, Aiden, Natalia and Peter

What’s better than getting to photograph a couple’s first child? Getting to photograph their SECOND child, as well! That was the case when I got to photograph this adorable family over the course of Natalia’s pregnancy, both on-location outdoors in our amazing Connecticut scenery, and at the Looking Up Photography studio. For this two-time Belly to Baby package client, I’ve now been lucky enough to photograph many different sessions, each of them featuring amazing clothing selected by Natalia. For our most recent session together, little Aiden looked adorable in his white polo and gray chino shorts.

Belly to Baby: Aiden

Outdoor Maternity Photography in Greenwich, Connecticut

Even at only a few years old, now big brother Aiden is sweet and sensitive. My friend Peter is a fun, energetic, and proud papa. Mom Natalia is a classic beauty. She is full of poise and adores being ‘smothered’ in love by her two (now three!) boys.

Natalia’s gown for her maternity session was inspired by the dress worn by Megan Markle for her second pregnancy. Natalia also provided me with access to her Pinterest board, for inspiration, which was incredibly helpful! Of course, once Aiden saw his mama in her beautiful gown, he thought she was the most beautiful in the world. He has the best expressions! And really, is there anything cuter than a fabulous pregnant mother holding her firstborn?

I love how our first set of photos truly captured each family member’s personality. There’s loving energy from Peter, a thoughtful, dreamy look from Natalia, and just enough twinkle in Aiden’s eye! My goal as a newborn, maternity, and family photographer is always to capture genuine expressions and real joy. Outdoor sessions like this one allow me to build a unique and fun session based on the things that make a family unique. I had so much fun pulling together this little ‘adventure’ for these amazing souls.

Looking Up Photography Studio Newborn Session

I’ve enjoyed photographing this beautiful family so much. Each session has been different, and filled with inspiration. Being able to include Natalia’s parents in a photo, in the studio, added an extra special element to our photo sessions.

The Sweetest Sydney This Side of the Equator – Connecticut Studio Newborn Session

Photographing newborn baby girls is one of the staples of my business, but in the summer months they are extra sweet! I photographed this session about a month ago and it is one of the sweetest ever! One of my favorite families asked me to photograph this adorable session for their newborn daughter, Sydney. And mom specifically asked for some professional photos of Sydney with big brother Jack, whose newborn session I captured in 2019. I’m excited to share this Greenwich studio newborn session with you!

Talk about an entrance! Sydney is such a beauty, I had to deck her out – Swan Lake style! This feathery backdrop did its thing, softening that newborn skin. And of course, the floral headband finished the look perfectly.

Our adorable setup was set in my local studio. I always have fun using these precious layers of white, which were specifically requested by mom. White allows me to really place my freshest little clients as the centerpiece of each and every image! And I didn’t hold back for this studio newborn session.

Jack blessed us with the most gorgeous smiles! He even sang along with me to some of his favorite bands! And of course, we completed the sibling newborn photos with the most adorable image, pictured above.
